Poop on feathers around the vent.
« on: May 10, 2009, 18:30 »
I'm a little concerned about one of my chooks.  Its an ex-batt, and has been retired for about 10 weeks.  I have 8 in total and we're only getting 5 eggs a day, but I'm unsure who is laying.

Stevie McQueen seems to have poop around her vent feathers, probably for about 7 days,  she's pretty high up in the pecking order, and a bit of a rebel (hence the name).  She seems fine in herself, no breathing problems, eatting, drinking, playing with the rest, her comb is red (it does flop to the side but this has always been the case ever since we got her, her comb is also about 4x bigger than the rest)  I've watched her over the last few days and although her poops are slightly less firm than the standard they don't seem particulary runny, I've also checked out the poo thread and it doesn't seem like any of the bad poo's.  They were wormed about 2 months before we got them.  Their diet is layers mash twice daily, ocassional corn and kitchen scraps, they get garlic in there water, which is changed every day.

Should I be concerned or is Stevie just a little bit messy?

When the chucks where is in the battery they had access to food all the time. You should leave food out for them.
As to your question.  I think you should wash it for her with warm water.

Yes

Seriously
Just the affected areas, do not go dunking your chuck.
