Companion Plants for potatoes
« on: May 04, 2009, 17:04 »
Finally back on our allotment after having twins last year (2 newborns not really conducive to spare time required for growing veggies!).

Just wondering if anyone can suggest what to grow amongst potatoe rows.  I've actually spaced mine rather generously apart and I'd like to fill the gaps a bit!

Thanks in advance!
I'd like to think I knew what I was doing....but generally I don't!!!

I grew sunflowers between my spuds - worked really well for me but caused a few raised eyebrows!!
Also knew a guy who used to plant his sprouts between the rows of spuds

How about sweetcorn? I am trying this for the first time as it was in one of my daughter's RHS gardening books. Fingers crossed it seems a good idea

I'm new to this so silly question.  Presumable you sow the companion seed after earthing up - else don't you just ruin it all?  Or what is teh technique to make this work.  I've been looking for spare inches to grow the sunflowers so I really like this idea.

You plant the sunflowers along the bottom of the furrows once you have done the final earthing up. Only suitable for maincrop because you will be wanting to dig earlies while the sunflowers are at their best.

I grow sunflowers in with squashes, pumpkins and courgettes. They appreciate the shade of the sunflowers.

Do you therefore have to dig the horseradish pots up every year and move them around to follow the potato rotation?
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for all the replies, I do have sunflowers to plant out but think I might use those over the squash and courgettes (great idea Salmo).  Think I'm going to hunt down some marigolds!
