Swede variety
« on: May 04, 2009, 13:38 »
Hi

I was growing some lovely sweetcorn seedlings in my fibre pots and started hardening them off by leaving them outside during the day then in at night - on Friday  the dog decided that the fibre pots all needed tearing up so unfortunately my sweetcorn is no more!!

Anyway, i dont want to go out and buy more fibre pots because im a tight person so i thought i'd grow some swede instead.  My question is what is the best variety to grow, i have never grown swede before and am quite new to growing altogether so which variety is best, the allocated space for them isnt overly sunny if that makes a difference.

Thanks for any help
Emma

You could always make some paper pots and grow some more sweetcorn, it's not too late as they grow quickly :)
But if you really want to grow swede i grow marion it's an old variety but has always worked for me! and it's resistant to club root and mildew :)

I grew Brora with astonishing success. Not bragging - just beginner's luck I guess. The three I planted were enormous and tasty. Seems a very unfashionable vegetable these days but I have always liked it - with smoked fish and taters
If you can't be an excellent example be a terrible warning...

I grew Marian last year and I got a pretty good crop. So good in fact that I've still got a pile of them in storage that will need to get used up. Not bad for 3 six foot rows.

I need to try and catch up the 3 weeks i have just lost.

Thanks for your help anyway.
