best material to use for brassica collars
« on: April 15, 2009, 11:21 »
Looked at the wealth of advice on the forum after doing a search on this.  Have decided to make some of these brassica collars but I have a few materials at my disposal, I have cardboard, roofing felt, weed supressant membrane, and I have some hanging basket liner that is fleecy with some plastic interwoven ( not very thick and think those eggs might slip through fabric bits in places).

Before I enlist daughter to cut shapes out ( it being easter hols and children's TV now driving me mad ), I thought a poll of the most favoured material would be good for all of us embarking on this.

Thanks for contributing  :)

I've never used them on my brassicas and have never had a root fly problem with them.

I spent a great deal of last May & June replacing collars that had blown away or been picked up and dropped by foxes who seem to love rubber based material.

I'll be going for nothing this year.  I'll make sure I have plenty of back up plants if it goes wrong though.

Aunt sally do you use netting on your brassicas ? If so does that mean you don't need collars ?

Thanks

The cabbage whites are out and about, so the netting is already on. I also use carpet underlay for the root fly. More give than the roof felt, and allows stem to broaden. Plenty of bits and pieces from the carpet fitters.

I've gone for the green scouring pads cut into squares with a slit up to the middle with a small circle cut out for the stalk. I'm not sure if these are adequate as it's my first time of trying, but if cardboard works then I think this stuff should be OK.

I've also covered the bed with debris netting for the birds and butterflies.

Like Aunty, never used them, fortunate never to have had a problem. Only got club root to contend with! >:(
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
