Newspaper Brassica Collars?
« on: May 27, 2011, 10:58 »
Some of my summer greens are succumbing to the dreaded cabbage root fly. I`ve never bothered in the past with collars, but on the small plot I have now I need to minimise losses.

I shall be planting out my winter greens in around six weeks, and I`ve just hit on the idea of using old newspapers as collars. Maybe separate each paper into two or three, cut to the centre of the pages, put around the plant and weigh the edges with a bit of soil.

Will it work?
I`m left handed, what`s your excuse?

i believe the fly gets through to the root where its made a hole rocking in the wind.
so long as the paper is close to the stem collar.
only issue would be if the paper gets so wet it starts to rot and takes the stem with it.
