Brassica collars?
« on: May 13, 2007, 12:34 »
I have recently transplanted califlower, swede and calabrese into my plot. I have just read that it is a good idea to put a collar made of roofing felt around the plant. Is this correct? If so how do i go about attaching it?

cheers all.
new to this, so all help and advice is greatly appreciated and well needed!!

They have a slit at so that you can open them and place around the neck of the plant and then adjust so that they sit snug.

The fleece should keep off Cabbage Whites and the root fly so you should be okay.  Cabbage Whites will try to get themselves through & may even manage to lay eggs through fleece which touches the plants.  If you can't keep the fleece proud of the plants, then do check for eggs from time to time.

I can't believe butterflies could be so sneaky!

I will devise a system of small sticks and little yoghurt pots to keep the fleece up off the plants.

So how do we do it? I don't know about doing this.
So I cut a circle of felt or similar with a slit, then put it where on the plant? mine are about 4-5 inch high at the moment.

TIA

I plant all mine through teram.I cut a large cross fold it back and plant in there fold the teram back so its touching the stem,as the plant grows it has room to grow and the teram is acting as a collar also the ground keeps moist and weed free,i also use the same method for pumkins and cucumbers
