I have millions of tadpoles!
« on: April 14, 2009, 09:04 »
This is probably a silly question - but my alloment pond is teeming with tiny tadpoles  (frog) - what do they eat? I can't believe the miniscule pond is going to sustain them. There is only chickweed type stuff. Can I add anything to improve their survival rate?

I hate to say this, but they eat each other.

Survival of the fittest & all that!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Obviously it doesn't apply to you Lina, but the fish and newts apparently eat them too...well they do in my pond... :(

The taddies will eat the roots off the duckweed but it seems not the leaves , if you have a nice weedy waterbutt tip some taddies in and they will clean it out for you. If possible try to move them to ' the wild' before they get to the cannibal stage.
Sometimes if a small  pond has far too many taddies they use up all the oxygen and  all die. Not nice , so the earlier you re-home some the better.

Mmm! Frogs legs :tongue2: Don't forget to have plenty of mobile chairs for them when they get legless
The answer lies in what you put into the ground!
