Cucumber seedlings
« on: April 06, 2009, 11:14 »
My cucumber seedlings are now at around 2 inches but the 2 small leaves have shriveled!  Will these still be ok and should I pot them into bigger pots now as they are still in the propogator?

Do they have any true leaves at all ?? they may be ok but are very susceptible to cold draughts.

Nope no leaves just the 2 small ones at the top.  I did put them out in the sun the other day.  At the moment they are in the bedroom but there are no cold drafts.

When you put them in the sun were they sheltered from any wind / breeze. They may be suffering from wind burn?

I just put them on the patio.  Is wind burn affect them at all or will the recover?  I remember it was quite a windy day.

I think that they were very young to be put outside in any weather and it would probably be the "wind chill factor" that has attacked them. I would agree with richyrich7 and plant some more tonight, you will still get a good crop, we are all still learning.

If you remember that cukes are true heat loving plants, then that should guide you. They can't tolerate any cold or drafts, nor can they take direct sun until they've been properly hardened off (short periods of filtered sun for about 2 weeks first). And that cukes don't like their roots disturbed so very carefully move any into pots, or better still, direct seed into pots.

Good point Trillium I must admit I have the sun side of the propagator shaded by an old sheet on sunny days.

As it's a bit early to have such large cukes growing, you're better off potting them into larger pots as the roots will be quite large by the time they're ready to go outside or into a warm enough greenhouse.
