Pinching out cucumber seedlings...
« on: March 10, 2014, 05:32 »
Over the years, we've grown cucumbers in the greenhouse, and left them as a single cordon, which we then wind round string attached to the roof. It seems to work, (even assuming that the normal death rate for cucumber seedlings can be as high as 150%...)!

Do others here pinch out the seedlings, to form more arms? We're growing Telegraph Improved this year, and I might even try one or two outside to give them a holiday...

I'm just so grateful they grow I leave well alone,I don't want to give them another excuse to curl up & die.

Fiddle about with them - never!

I've never grown a cucumber plant with just one branch. They always branch out of their own accord.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Some F1 varieties do seem to grow only fruit in the armpits, rather than grow any branches - but Telegraph usually branches  :)

Thanks all, it seems that I'll leave well alone...

Just found some Burpless Tasty Green seeds in the shed, so they'll probably die off too...

What do you lot know about it?   :nowink:

My GH cukes die off from the bottom at approximately the same rate as they grow from the tip and as such are fully self-pinching out (until they lose the will to do even that, of course! )
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

They're confusing me too - the concept of cucumbers growing; just seems unnatural.   :nowink:

Yes, I suppose it is unnatural to expect cucumbers to actually grow and produce fruits..:0¬

If anyone pinched me, I expect I'd just wither away too, but then I'm not a new-fangled F1 Hybrid!
