Hi. Does anyone have a favourite peat free compost they would like to suggest?

I have been using the B&Q Peat Free compost which is made from fine grade shredded bark, but the pieces can be large enough to prevent fine seeds from reaching the surface I feel - low germination for anything finer than Turnip or Beetroot. For Beans this stuff is fine.

Can anyone recommend a nice fine peat free compost that is not too expensive to use on an allotment scale?

What about John Innes? Does this contain peat as it is soil based?

Hi

We've just bought 75l multi purpose from B&Q and also 25l bags of John Innes No1 (Labelled B&Q). I was quite disgusted at the John Innes one - its was not in the least bit suitable for growing seeds IMHO. I even found a bit of glass in it. I will take the other bag back and not bother again - esp at the price. The multipurpose compost was a big bag of twigs as well only cheaper/litre.
