1 White Egg Only!!!
« on: April 04, 2009, 20:16 »
Hi
Can anyone tell me if it usual to get a white egg from brown egg laying hens. My Black Rock Chickens have just started laying nice light brown eggs so l was surprised one day to find one white one.

Any comments on this?

Does it have a slightly rough surface ?

If so, it may just be calcium deposited on the surface hiding the true pigment.
I think you can also get pale shells due to heat stress. Maybe general stress too but not sure.

Roastie my amberlink has laid a couple of very pale (virtually white) eggs over the past 3 days! she is missing her old friend Paxo at the moment so assume that this is the reason
thinks her guardian angel`s gone on strike !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I shipped some eggs to a friend in Alaska and she told me to be sure I didn't send her any of the Naked Neck eggs so I chose only white eggs to send her which should have been out of the two Leghorn girls we have. You guessed it she got one NN egg.

The only reason that I have been able to come up with is age, our layers are all getting close to ten years old. I have spoke to others about this and they all agree that as a hen ages the egg shell color lightens up. My buddy has noticed that in his Marans too.
