Morning all,

One or two of  the eggs I was going to have for my dinner last night had an extremely thick white, one in particular. It wasn't the whole white that was like it, there was also some watery white too. I think a couple of the eggs were like it, possibly both from the same chicken, which I think has just started laying (I was using 4 altogether). After I had tried to whisk them together for an omelette, the thick bit had hardly been broken up at all, so I scooped it out thinking "yuk" and didn't eat it.

Is it normal for young hens to lay odd eggs like this? Most of the eggs we've been eating we've had boiled, so haven't noticed this before...

(PS I was cooking for myself and the wife...I am not a 4 egger!)

I would put it down to your chicken having just started laying. It can sometimes seem to take a while for the egg laying system to start working 100%.

One of mine is starting to come back into lay after a break (when she was moulting) of nearly 2 months. We started off with a couple of shell-less eggs and then yesterday progressed to something nearly normal (it had a small hole in the end). We are getting there slowly!

Hi, had the same problem with my hens when they first started laying! Some very strange eggs indeed,still ate them with no ill effects. Had loads of double yolkers as well, none lately though...Aden..
