Onion seed germination?
« on: April 04, 2009, 08:24 »
I seem to be getting about a 1 in 3 germination rate.  >:( >:( >:(
The seed is fresh and this years.  :( :(
Is this to be expected?

Means I am having to sow lots more then expected and the sowing are now staggered.

out of a 12ft row of Blood Holland Red onions (red spring onion type) i have one seedling after 3 weeks  :(
What is going wrong........seeds?.....temp?....not compost cos they're in the soil!!
I dunno....but it is annoying when you've paid good money for you seeds

muttering as she heads off to order more from different supplier..........................

Planted a tray of 30 Ailsa Craig. had 26 of them come up. Doing very well now, might even plant out tomorrow.

I have sown bedfordshire champion last autumn in 2foot troughs. Excellent germination and let them winter in the open and have planted out in the allotment and they are thriving.
Thought I would try something new and did the same thing this spring with mammoth reds.  About 50% germination, but what is more they don't seem to be growing very strongly. Didn't really think about it until this thread appeared.
