Moving Tomato plants
« on: April 02, 2009, 19:02 »
Hi All,

Quick Question ...

When is it safe to move my tomato plants from the windowsill to an unheated greenhouse.?

Mine are about three inches tall and seem to be growing quickly since i re-potted them last weekend.

They have the foil around the rear of them and look ok. Not leggy at all.

Thanks in advance for replies.

Steve

Pretty much anytime as long as the greenhouse is frost free and the temperature doesn't drop too low in there. A few places in the UK will get freak frosts as late as May.

I would say it is way to early to put Toms in an unheated Greenhouse.
Last year I put one in about the last week in April and it died because of the cold nighttime temps.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Exactly. That's why I qualified my response with Ifs. Otherwise, wait.

mine have been doing well in an unheated greenhouse for about a week now. If i see that the forecast is to be very cold i will put a cover over them. I also make sure they are shaded from strong sun.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

I've just moved mine to a heated greenhouse.

My mother had an unheated one and I would have never put plants in there until the end of April. (I wouldn't have been there to rush out & cover them up though!).
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Put them in the greenhouse first thing in the morning and bring them back indoors when it gets dark.    The nights are still too chilly.

I agree - it's what I've been doing for the best part of a week now. Having said that, it does, of course, depend on where your greenhouse is!  :)

I have aluminium staging in mine and I've been a little concerned at how cold it can get. So I stopped of at Wickes on my way home tonight and bought an 8'x2' slab of insulating polystyrene (2" thick) which is now proudly sat on top of it - and I'm chuffed to bits with it!  :)

It's a bit of faffing about, but my limited experience tells me it is worth it!  :)

We've moved most of ours into an unheated greenhouse BUT we have a gas bottle with heater attached to the top just in case the temperature drops too much in the night.
A few years ago we were caught out by a frost in early June so be careful.
