Yet another Potato Q....
« on: March 19, 2009, 20:13 »
Today down at the plot my neighbour was planting his spud and i noticed his trench was twice as deep as expected, he then put a layer of  Horse manure covered with a layer of soil then his spuds.

Now im sure this is nothing new but ive not seen it done before so just asking for peoples comments/reviews on this please.... should i get some for mine? or not?

Cheers

I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

I haven't planted mine out yet MW, I'm still trying to clear my new plot...

But my dad has advised me to do that and my plot neighbour also new ( but experienced) is doing the same...I've got my manure on order ;).

Hi, it's too much work for me you can muck your plot pull a line down and put them in with a trowel, 12" earlies 15" main crop 24" between rows.

Keep on a troshing J W

Or a bulb planter, as I will be doing on Saturday, weather permitting. ;) 8)

Due to the high number of weed seeds we get in our manure I stopped using it for some areas last year. For the spuds I got some compost from Aldi (£2.33 a bag) and used one bag per trench. The trenchs were a spade deep and I planted the spuds on top of the compost with greta results.

When I say allotment mentor... I mean the old boy who loves coming over and telling me when I am doing something 'wrong'

He went apopletic over my munty frame   ;)

The allotment secretary on the site I've joined recommended taking lumps of the turf I took off a bit of overgrown path last autumn (it's been sitting in a heap since but hasn't rotted down much) and putting one in with each potato.  It'll mean there isn't a small turf obelisk getting in my way any more, so I'll give it a go, but I hadn't heard of doing this before.  Anyone tried it?

No, I definitely don't want wireworm!  Could I just look at the turf to see if I can see any wireworms, or are they more devious than that?

I am clearing a somewhat neglected orchard and to save time I am digging and planting potatoes as I go with a good layer of old garden compost under them. Has worked well in past and the differance in appearance in the garden as area gets tidied and new soil appears fresh and all nicely dug over and heap of compost disappears is good for the soul.
Luckily I am free of pests but I would not personally put old turf in the trench as little nutritional value and tends to lie there and get dug back up again when harvesting. I use old turf to form pumpkin beds.

I'm going for spent hops in the bottom of my trench - hope it doesn't "burn" them, perhaps a bit of soil on top of hops just in case

Ordinary potato fertiliser, if you have it, would do the job as well at planting
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
