mini grow tunnels
« on: March 14, 2009, 15:12 »
just a heads up for people . Three years ago i bought some netting grow tunnels from B&Q. previously i had made my own with fleece and hoops etc and had tried some plastic ones. Anyway these 3M ones have lasted and worked really well. Unlike fleece which tears after 18 months or the birds steal for nesting and clear plastic which is too thick to store easily and does not stand up too frost, these  fold flat and are also happy to sit out all winter. Another plus of the black mesh is that it is so fine that it keeps out greenfly and probs whitefly too well at least my lettuce had nothing on them and they were nearby to sprouts that had some whitefly.
Anyway was in B&Q yesterday and they still have them at £9.98 definite good value IMO(they also have green mesh -tough but holes too big to stop greenfly, fleece ones and clear plastic - am not recommending those)
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

they are not on the website and not all stores have them so might be worth a phone call first if its a long journey. They are a B&Q own brand and they are called "netting grow tunnels"

Thanks for the heads up pushrod, they sound ideal for cabbages/lettuce and a good price, too  :)

I'm going to B&Q this evening to buy (hopefully) some flexible plastic rods to try to use as supports for cloches/tunnels. I shall have to check these out too. I'll let you know how this works out because robust cloches are always so expensive to buy.

Re flexible plastic rods, the cheapest way i have found is to use blue water pipe, 20 or 25mm. can be bought in rolls of 25 or 50 mtrs. search around for best price. It does a great job

Found some white plastic tubing in B&Q tonight and a roll of 15m cost £14.95 which I thought was pretty good. Am aiming to make some cloches 1m wide and around 75com high in the middle, with plastic covering that I have already ( fairly stout stuff) Not sure about the ends... just gather it up and put a stake in the know into the ground or something more ambitious?

Any ideas guys? ::) ::) ::)

Oh, and there were none of the ones Pushrod mentioned in our store.

still experimenting with this I use the blue pipe 25mm as it is stiffer than the push fit 15mm. Screwfix sell a roll of 25mm 50mtrs for £24.46 online or find a local store. As for set up I am using bamboo stakes iside pipe then pushed into the ground and timber batton laid along the side to hold netting down. I will beat those pesky pigeons. :)

How easy is it to fold a piece of corrugated plastic under these pipes.  As I have seen these in mags but not sure if bought like that or made.

Depends on how big a radius you make the piping really, you can use more than half a real of the piping to making a sort of half oval shape which would make putting plastic under it a bit easier.
