Herbs Tansy & Wormwood
« on: March 18, 2009, 14:29 »
Hi

Has anybody ever grown these two plants ? (Tansy & Wormwood)

I have obtained seeds and am going to try growing them as I have seen Tansy in a cake recipe and Wormwood (Absinthe-Fav tipple) in a seed cat.

I have read both are repellents of flying insects, but Tansy is not to be grown near grazing animals.

Can anybody advise as to why Tansy may affect grazing animals ? and offer any advise ?

Many thanks.

PS No grazing animals near my garden.

Tansy medicinally is thought to cause miscarriage and in high dosage is toxic....so doesn't sound the sort of thing you'd want your animals eating.
Same sort of thing with Wormwood....high dosage toxic.

So i don't think you'd want to be growing it for your mixed salad  :tongue2:

Thanks, there was also a warning with the tansy to avoid use in pregnancy and consult a herbalist, you have explained why.

Growing it more as a plant really, doubt I will get round to eating it in a cake, but if it's grows, you never know.

It's an old recipe from yonks back, so maybe before they were aware of the side effects. I doubt building a still to make Absinthe is an option either, Police station is a bit too local !  :D

I actually find tansy has an unpleasant smell, but the flowers look pretty  :)

I believe wormwood can adversely affect plants growing near it too! :tongue2:
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Apparently the roots exude something that inhibits other plants growing. A lot of plants do this.

It could still be worth growing to use foliage as an insect repellant. I'd like to try it out on carrot root fly.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".
