Small flies in compost
« on: March 07, 2009, 20:01 »
Hi all
This question is probably not a new one but here goes...... :)

I have a small heated greenhouse with many seedlings on the go at the moment, but I notice that amongst the compost there are lots of small black flies walking around the trays - they tend not to fly far.  They are larger than "blackfly" and not an infestation like blackfly.  Does anyone know if they are harmful to the seedlings and if so how to get rid of them?

I have the same thingies in my compost bin and a few in my greenhouse. They have not done any damage but if you are concerned go and buy some of those yellow insect sheets that give them a sticky death!!!

could be mushroom flies and a sign the compost is too wet
