Can I grow leeks and celery in rubble sacks?
« on: February 06, 2009, 17:56 »
Hi very new to all this but having so much fun I'm encouraging all my family yo have a go too
My mum's garden is fairly big but not enough room for veg patch so have decided to make her a container veg plot instead.

Have noticed the growing of pots in rubble sacks but wondered what else they could be used for?

I'm planting pots, leeks, sweetcorn, dwarf french bean, cabbage, cauli carrots and onions

If the sacks are tall enough to carry adequate soil, why not try it? Though I doubt corn would work well. Their height nearing maturity would cause them to fall over in any windstorm or heavy rain. As long as there are drainage holes in the bottom, you could try all the shorter growing veg. A few scrap sticks stuck in 'corners' would help maintain a shape.  Just keep an eye open for moisture as the sacks would likely dry out a bit faster.
