Potato in big containers
« on: February 06, 2009, 17:09 »
Hi Chaps

Need some advice about how many potatoes i can plant in an old plastic water tank. It is about 4' across, 4' deep and holds 500 Litres. My original thoughts were that 6 (Desiree) would be about right, but now ive started thinking that as the compost will be quite loose and deep, maybe i could plant a few more.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Hi Smilydog,

If my maths is any good you have a surface of about 12.5 sqft.

Working on the area that shopbought spud sacks give I reckon you could set about 10-12 spuds and still get good results. :D

Dont forget to make drainage holes in the bottom of the tank.

Hope this helps.

I'd have thought that unless you fill it with a heck of a lot of compost, spuds at the bottom of a 4' deep tank would be struggeling for light.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

I am trying to imagine you tipping it over to get the spuds out when it is full of wet compost. Right idea but maybe just too big.

You could try making a container out of blue pallets instead!  :) :) :)

Sorry to disagree dave but if the spuds are set on 6 inches of compost and covered with another 6 inches when they come through thats only 3feet and as you would then earth them up all the while the lack of direct light should not affect too much. :)

Iain, how often do we tip our garden over to get the spuds out. at least no one is going to pinch the tub :D

You still won't get as much light to the haulms as in an open space. (Remember biology & photosynthesis?)

Also when they are but young sprogs the shoots will be in the bottom of a dark tank and will be drawn to the light feet above them, leading them to be weaker.

I have some large maybe 2ft wide by 30" deep, I put a brick under one side to tilt towards light.  guess that would be difficult though with a 4ft tank.

Best plan is cut the container in half so that you have 2 tubs 4 feet wide and 2 feet high.
You would have to find a way of removing all of the potatoes otherwise you would get rogues that keep growing.
