After two attempts at sowing celery only one germinated and it's now just 4cm high 

Will the little darling grow on its own or does it need another to pollinate

Can't answer your question Jan, but just wondered how long it took to germinate. I've sown some, and they've been in for what seems like weeks if not months, and I'm getting little two leaf seedlings coming up where the seed should be in the cell, but they look quite fragile, so don't know if they are weeds or not!

I picked up some at B&Q last week that according to the label were at 18 weeks and they are only 6 inches tall so far so they may take a long time to grow from seed into anything sizeable to transplant

My first attempt sown in the greenhouse in March nothing appeared after 4 weeks so I tried again mid April and just one appeared, it was tiny for ages and is still only 4cm high after 2 months, and very delicate thin leaves, looks like it could give up at any moment, I carefully re-potted it a few weeks ago just to give it some fresh compost

Thanks - it actually looks like its got celery leaves - I'll post a pici of whats coming up in my cells - nothing like yours at the moment, but new seedlings rarely look like the grown plant leaves do they?

I can't exactly remember what mine looked like but like you say they generally don't look like the finished article at first, I'm sure others will have a better clue...well done tho, you have plenty to work with even if some don't make it

Yes, a single celery plant will survive on its own as you're not growing it for seed which will happen the 2nd year anyway and it doesn't need a pollinator as is.

Celery is mostly a bog loving plant so be sure to manure and water it well for a tasty plant.
