sick chick
« on: February 06, 2009, 10:30 »
Hi all, one of my hybrids doesn't seem at all well.  She if puffed up, drinking but not really eating and sitting under the coop away from the others.  She has just started laying and was fine yesterday.  They were all wormed a couple of weeks ago.  I don't know whether I should check to see if she is egg bound or if the yellow poo suggests something else.  I would be grateful for any advice.

Could she be egg bound? You say her poo is yellow is it solid or soft?

Can I ask what you wormed them with?

Thanks, I wormed them with Verm - X.  She doesn't appear to be trying to lay, just sitting aroung looking very sorry for herself.  The poo around the vent appears pale/lemon yellow - soft but not watery.

I've just put her in a box away from the other 3 who all seem fine.

I don't know what others may think but I would worm with Flubenvet I would also put garlic cloves into the drinking water.

Do you have a friendly chook vet you can speak to?

I agree with KimT best to worm with flubenvet, verm-x is more a preventative and it doesn't kill gape :)
Info on all worming stuff can be found here :) http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=4348.0

Thanks the poo looks like the last normal/ caecal picture.

Can they become ill overnight with worms?

I think it's more likely to be the case (if they have them) that they slowly decline in health.
Chickens hide illness very well :( So you may not notice the decline :(

The other thing to consider is that she is about to lay a soft shelled egg.
Laying soft shelled eggs really seems to knock hens for 6 :( But once the egg is out they soon perk up  :)

Can I also point out that, although apple cider vinegar is good for their digestive system, and I'm unable to comment about the carrots, it is advisable to use worming products that are designed for worming chickens if you fear that they may need to be wormed.

Just thought I to let you know how she is going. She survived the weekend but seemed chesty and still puffed up, not eating and maybe not drinking -  so I took her to the vet.  She's been on IM antibiotics and is now eating, perky and looking a bit bored with the bathroom so she is going into the garden today.
Vets consultation and 2 lots of antibiotics cost almost twice the cost of a new chicken so not sensible but very rewarding and I've learnt a lot.

Good news  :)

I don't think many of us can claim to be sensible.

Juat thought I ought to let you know she has been back out with others since yesterday.  One is being a bit mean but she is eating OK, so hopefully she should be OK now.  Thanks for all the advice.
