other kitchen scraps
« on: January 27, 2009, 17:15 »
apart from the usual boiled peelings (carrots/potatoes etc), what items that would normally go in the composter do people give to their chooks?

i was wondering whether i could include chopped apple cores and orange peel to the peel mash when i make it?

I'm pretty sure i read somewhere that citrus fruits are not good for them , but maybe someone else can confirm this?

My girls will kill for cooked pasta ( cooked without salt ) :)

as others i cook the usual unsalted veg/fruit peelings along with porridge and a few mealworms . If we have any produce spare ,i feed it 2 the hens  they tend to decide on what`s best to eat.

so you wouldn't see a problem with cooking up citrus peel/citrus fruits as part of the mash?

I definitely would not give them any citrus, whether cooked or not. Or avocado. Or green bits of potato!

My 4 ex-bats (only got on Saturday) went went wild for spagetti - cooked (no salt) and hung, dangling from tree branches.Only a few strands cause it's new to them - but in just a few moments they looked more like "normal" chooks than they have done for the past few days. Probably thought that it had been raining giant worms  :D

Our neighbours deposit bags of peelings on our doorstep for the chickens, and one must have had orange peelings in - I couldn't stand the smell as it was boiling up on the hob -  :tongue2:

Chickies loved it though!  :D
