« on: January 15, 2009, 15:47 »
Hello everyone, as you all know the pound shop is my second home.
Looked in today and guess what the gardening stuff is back whoo hoo!!!!!!!!!

So i have bought two packs of seed potatoes(9 in a bag) in and two 6 veg seed packs for £1.
The seed potatoes are called pentland javelin and are first earlies. (plant out march to april)

Just thought i'd let you all know!

I grew poundshop PJs last year - they were lovely. We've bought a 25kg sack for our allotment shop now (£11.50). And 4 other varieties.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

Is this the Poundland pound shop? We have so many round here of different names. Funny how they show up 6 months before our banker friends realise there is a reccesion ;) Anyway, if its the green poundland then I might have to pop in for a peek as they still had Christmas stuff in the gardening section last time I looked. And yes this was after Christmas :)

Great can't wait to try them noshed :)
I'm so tempted to start them off now on window sill and shove them in the plastic broken greenhouse thing.
May be i should just stop myself before i go too mad.

Bought some £1 for 5 seed pots today from wilkinsons. Maris pipier & charlotte. I'm tempted to get a huge bag from there now too and use it in my bigger bed.

Christmas stuff still here in our pound shops. Its freaky. Easter stuff should be in by now. ;)

hi,

is it better to buy seed potatoes? last year i saved some spuds bought from tesco that had started to grow roots when forgotten at the back of the cupboard. i keep them in an outhouse, then planted them in some conatiners. i was quite late doing it, the wind ravaged the plants but i still got a fair few spuds out of it.

back to the question, better to buy seed potatoes or buy some out of date spuds and let them start sprouting?
do it today, tomorrow it might be illegal

If you are going to grow in containers then growing chitted spuds from a supermarket is ok. You change the soil every year so theres no chance of harbouring any spores in the soil to ruin next years crop. However it is not recommended to do so on your lotty. Seed potatoes are safer than a shop bought spud, as they dont carry any infection.
Then theres only blight, slugs and wireworms to worry about!!

I grow a mixture of both, but then again i generally grow in containers.
I tend to buy seed because they are disease free, and the price of tubers can be cheap, if you know where to look.
