Introducing Hens - Advice Needed!
« on: November 12, 2008, 21:07 »
Good Evening!

I've got 5 lovely hens currently living in two chicken houses.  I have Lucky (my grey speckled hybrid) and 2 bantams (Thelma & Louise) in one house and 2 hens (Gurt & Daisy) in another which were given to me and my husband as a wedding pressie back in July.

I haven't been brave enough to mix the two tribes, but I am expecting delivery of my eglu cube this Friday and I wonder if I should take this chance to bring them together.

I thought that I could get the new home ready during Friday and put them all in Friday night.  I recently bought some nasty smelling spray as Lucky did go through a phase of feather pecking.  So i was thinking of giving them all a spray with that so that they don't peck each other too much.

Help! :?

Thanks

Vickie  :D

i would take the weekend to just let them roam free all together if you can. then come sunday night pop them in your new cube (what colour) after dark.

they may be a bit of pushing and shoving whilst they sort out who's boss. but its generally not anything to worry about

Thanks Babe for your reply,

I will let them roam together during the weekend, thats a great idea.  I have already started mixing them, but with a wire mesh inbetween them.  Lucky and Gurt seem to be muscling for pole position as they do try to peck each other through the mesh but they soon get bored then start pecking at the grass.  Gurt tries to attack the bantams but then Lucky steps in and the two of them are starting all over again. :?

I've ordered the green cube - I was thinking about getting a different colour but Simon (Hubby) said that it would blend in a bit better being green and as we live next to a public footpath, I don't want to draw attention to it as I've heard that Eglus are being stolen  :(  (although not in this area)

I will let you know how we get on!

Thanks Babe,

He is sitting next to me on the sofa and I had to giggle when I read your post!  Its a shame that the cube doesn't come in Yellow as I would have loved that colour!!

I've also got fairies that put chickens in the garden - oh and rabbits, cats and dogs! (although he was with me when we first saw our two doggies at the RSPCA - so that doesn't count!!).

Vickie
