Worlds most expensive Tomatoes !!
« on: November 04, 2008, 21:24 »
Well, now that my toms have all finished I have had to resort to buying some from our local shop.

Have a look at the price

Should have been £1.99 for 7-8 very small ones that don't even weigh half a pound with all the pack and stalks.

At that rate a single one of my tom plants this year would have had about £50 worth of fruit on it !!

Rip off Britain !! (I only paid 38p though and thought that was dear   )

Roll on next years growing season.

38p is quite good for them with the prices as they are but £1.59 is silly money for tomatoes. you can get the seeds for £1.20 say and a bit of compost a pot and a cane you'd have plenty of tasty toms all through summer  :D

 it must be like childbirth - how quickly people have forgotten about the blight that devastated outdoor tomatoes!  2 years on the trot and I'm still waiting ...

Anybody also noticed the price of cheap tinned tom's has also risen dramatically over the last week or two, just happens to coincide with the end of the UK tom season.

Dan at that rate I've just composted £30 odd .

Gawd yes, Ive now refused to buy the posh ones (cant remember their name now...naploiwhatsits) and buy asda own. Even OH was shocked...from about 37p to nearly a quid! And we get through loads.

I forgot to mention the Spring Onions at ...............wait for it........89p for just 6 and a horrible Spanish lettuce at £1.29.

So that'd be about a fiver for a blooming Salad butty when you buy a loaf of bread for the price of a row of houses these days.

It's going to get to the stage where dodgy blokes hang around on street corners saying "Hey man..wanna buy some cheap carrots man,you know you want 'em,just a tenner a bag man,you know you really need your 5 a day"

Nope - some of my modest heritage peas!

Here's full size......

Just so we don't divert too much, at £1.59 a lb (in pods), picked 60 quids worth over just 2 days this year. Wonder what the whole crop would  have been worth!
