Worlds ugliest squash
« on: August 30, 2015, 16:04 »
I decided to harvest my ugly squash today - I don't know why it is so deformed as all others on the plant are fine but as the main stem to the fruit was going corky I thought I would bring it back and delve into it in the next few days to see if it is edible....

Do you think it could be a front runner for the worlds ugliest squash competition?

You should carve it for Halloween, it'd look amazing!

I showed my husband (closest thing to a kid I have haha!) he just eyed it up suspiciously and asked if it had a disease.

I was always told by my mum 'it's what is on the inside that counts' and I am sure it applies to squashes too....

So I decided to go back through my seed packets to try and work out which one has grown like this and it turns out that my ugly squash is actually a prize specimen

It was a Franchi packet of seeds from the wyevale 50p sale last year and I like squash so thought I would give it a go. Looking forward to eating it now!

It looks really good! Mine doesn't have any warts on it yet. Peeling could be a challenge..

Yes, not sure how I will do that yet - maybe roast in slices and then scoop/peel

That does look ugly, but please tell us how good it tastes Yum

If it stop raining and you get the chance for a BBQ, cut slices and de-seed, then brush with oil and sprinkle with the seasonings of your choice (chilli and garlic are good), then chuck on the grill.

The skin seems to disappear into the flesh and you just get a paper thin outside skin which is easy to peel off.  This also works in the oven if the rain doesn't let up, but you don't get the slight smoky taste.

I'm also interested in how it tastes  :)

I have just purchased these seeds from Wyevale likewise for 50p thought I would give this a go nothing to lose for 50 pence and I like to grow different varieties each year so I am really looking forward to growing next year after the positive comments

Me, I'd cut it into slices (skin on), roll the flesh side in olive oil in a roasting tin, give it a good sprinkling of freshly grated nutmeg and then bake in the oven till it was soft and caramelised.

That said, I reckon New shoot's suggestion is better than mine. I've never tried that. Sounds delicious.

So we only got around to eating this last night. I put big slices (skin on) into the oven, smeared with a little olive oil and some nutmeg and cinnamon. I then scrape the flesh away from the skin before eating. It was a yellow orange inside and was a very dry squash and also had quite a large seedy centre if that makes sense so you don't get loads of squash but half of it nicely did us. The taste was quite acceptable but I don't think it is one that particularly suits roasting as well as butternut for example.

I am going to use the other half in some sort of feta/spinach/squash pie or quiche tomorrow I think - got to work out a recipe.

Overall I would happily eat them again but they are not our favourite
