Help is needed!!
My neighbour found a tiny chick on the lane, it was chirriping for ages and they went to find what it was, and there was a tiny chick with a wound on its face where it had been pecked.  I have it in a shoebox with a towel, it is still chirruping.  What do I do to try to keep it warm and what can I feed it on if it survives the night?  Do tiny chicks need water too? If so, how do I go about that?  I have layers mash, can I feed the chick that? It is quite fine if I pick out the big bits!
Emu is fine, still acting odd.

Hi Pamela

Boil and egg and give it the yolk that should see it through the night, you might have to tap with your finger to get it intrested in it though.
A shallow dish with water in is also a good idea, I tend to pick them up and just dip their beaks in if they're unsure :)

As for heat they need aprox 90 degrees F /32 C   if you have a lamp pop it over the box not too close.

Hope the little guy makes it :)

Hi  folks, At the moment the chick is cuddled up to a half filled spice jar of hot water- I´ve well wrapped the bottle in the towel.  I´ve only got a daylight bulb lamp that throws out any heat at all, all the other lamps have saver bulbs in.  Would that be any good?  It is VERY bright!

Luckily I kept an egg back from the eggs laid today- we sold the rest!  (only 6)

The wound is dry so I have not bothered to tend to it, I´ve got iodine stuff, I could dab it with that, but as it is dry I thought it better to leave it, as it looks quite close to the ear hole.   can hear chciky chirriping at the moment :D   We are going to see friends tomorrow- so I guess if chicky is alive he/she will be coming along too for the ride :D

Pamela

Ps Thanks :D

I would go with the daylight bulb, Pamela.

At least you'll know that will give constant heat, hot water bottles and heat pads are good but tend to cool at the time the chick needs it most :)

Sorry back to ask again- with  the daylight lightbulb on , shall I leave the lid of the shoe box or partially off?

Well the chick didn´t eat the egg-  it went hard so it didn´t get much anyway!  What shall I feed it if it survives the night?  Would a little bread and milk be ok?
At the moment it is tucked inside my bra (plenty of room, it´s ok. no danger of getting squashed  )
I´ll tuck it up in the box once the doggies have gone outside to bed.   I have some fine cotton that I can drape over the shoe box.
The chicky isn´t able to stand up properly, it falls back on its behind.
I did a google search for hand rearing chicks and found a page for feeding day old chicks to reptiles- think google got the wrong message!

Ye Goggle doesn't always have the right answers

Bread & milk will be ok, case of anything really.

If alls ok tomorrow chop up a bit of grass and try that.

The problem with standing up could be one of two things, its either got something wrong with it or it is very new out of the egg :?

Got my fingers tightly crossed

Its coming to life, had to take it out of my bra, it was getting quite annoyed!  It feels much warmer.. At the moment it is sitting on my spare tyre :D I´ve tucked my tshirt in so it doesn´t fall out the bottom
No grass here, so I will hunt out some weeds.

I just took chick out of my tshirt and it pood on the table- how lucky was I!  He/she is standing up now, so my body heat must be good.  Going to try and get chicky to eat bread and milk now.
Pamelaps I´ve taken a photo I will ask Grannie Annie to post it on her for me :D

I was wondering if you have layers mash could you add a little warm water then mash the hard boiled egg in it as well -sprinke it on some tin-foil. Tap the tin foil with the tip of your finger, by mimicking mum you will teach the chick to eat, hope it helps! I guess you could kind of "cluck" as well??
