My tassels are brown and I have small cobs ~~all this seems early. Is anyone else at the same stage as myself ?

I think mine are about a week away from harvest.  Tassels are coffee coloured cobs are plumping up.  I'll take a picture when they are at harvesting stage.

Was wondering how soon my will be ready too. We also have tassels browning off, but the plants are only4-5 foot high and most cobs at knee height! Don't know what variety they are as they were bought unlabelled from a local gardeners sale.

mine are behind this year too, but have shot up with all of the sunny weather we've been having up north recently!

Glad of this rain tonight too, if it drys up tomorrow then they should put a spurt on again but are only just showing female cobs but with some quite advanced male flowers so here's hoping they work out well.

Charlotte, yes they do thicken out as the kernals develop - each tassle is connected to a kernal and when they've been polinated (wind pollination which is why you plant in blocks not rows) the tassles turn brown.

the variety I have grown gives 2-3 cobs per plant, but Aunty has a variety with 3-4 cobs per plant!

Lucky you! We had lovely hot weather for all of 3 days, and torrential rain for the next 3 days and not-so-torrential rain since

I'm not knocking it... it's usually freezing up here and whilst the south is enjoying a heatwave we get a pathetic couple of days of dryness followed by months of on/off rain!

Don't mind the rain... it fills the water butts up nicely so that when it does dry up I have some water to stop everything bolting  :D
