White spots on courgette plant
« on: July 31, 2008, 13:11 »
I've got some white spots appearing on my courgette plant's leaves. Not all the leaves are affected (less than a quarter seem to have the markings) and the plant itself seems quite happy. I've searched around but I'm not sure what's wrong - the leaves are dry and you can't rub the white stuff off so I don't think it's mildew. I've attached a couple of pics below - does anyone know what's wrong? Thanks!

Hmm, after a bit more searching I'm still not sure...anyone got any ideas? Is it possibly red spider mite? I had a look at the plant before it rained and I can't see any mites - there is a single piece of webbing between two of the leaves but it looks like an ordinary spiders web to me

someone will be along soon (Gobs, no doubt     ) to let you know what's going on with them!  :D

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Lol, well thank you both for looking anyway :)

I'm wondering if I didn't water enough or something as the discoloured bits are sort of crispy. However I have been watering at least once a day (normally twice) although the plant does sit out in the (south-facing) garden. The plant does look healthy though.

Maybe it's got sun-burn like all my cacti  :?

I think if you click on the pictures below it should take you to the large picture which shows the spots more clearly. I'm not sure why the ones aboev are resized like they are

Still stumped !

Do they get the early morning sun ?

Overnight moisture droplets form on the leaf edges.  Could the sun have damaged them ?

I believe you've got blackfly possibly, as i have the same problem with my courgettes. It's either that or fungus.

Ah ok thanks :) Don't think it's fungus as the leaves are dry. Could be blackfly. Could also be something to do with the sun as they are outside in a south facing garden and it has been horrendously hot here over the past few weeks!

Thanks for everyone's help :)

I'd say some leaf sucker bug damage, but as to which one, would be a wild guess.

If you've got blackfly it's definitely it. Diluted fairy liquid with water should do the trick, three treatments over 3 days should do it. Can you physically get access to look underneath the plant and squash bugs? That helps. Fairy liquid is ok on your plants and will not damage anything or poison the soil. It'll get rid of the blackfly but won't heal the leaf. Good luck, how many courgettes have you had off it?
