Gave up on the Black Rocks
« on: June 13, 2008, 09:59 »
After getting a big cockerel, spraying there backsides purple and fitting anti-feather pulling beak rings, i've given up trying to stop my Black Rock pecking each other bald. They are now living on a smallholding they 've got a big field a woodland and a donkey to keep them selfs occupied     :D

Ive now got some white jersey giants, road island reds and a couple of hybrids. They are only 5 weeks old ( pics to follow ) Im hoping that the cockerel keeps them in order, he seems to be up to now

Thank for the help and advice over the last few week concerning my baboon hens, it was a great help but i had to bite the bullet and move on
??? I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous... ???

I've been trying to decide on whether to get a black rock or a light sussex, are black rocks known for this kind of behaviour?

Don't know about in groups, but I've got one and she's the placidest (and greediest!) of the lot ...
Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

I think greed caused a lot of my problems, they would fight over food all the time

My lottie neighbour has a black rock in with other breeds (sussex, marrans and RIR's) and she bullies them something rotten!    They said it was in the nature of the BR to do this, so I'll be steering clear of them when I opt for my next lot!

I've already got one bully in my tiny flock of 3, a goldline, don't think I could deal with going through that again. The one that gets bullied the most is my copper maran, poor little thing, she's never aloud to eat until the others have eaten, she avoids eye contact with the goldline and is generally a bag of blooming nerves. :(

I think most hens are bullies and what often use to surprise me was that the one at the bottom of the pecking order becomes the biggest bully when a new bird is introduced . I have found orpingtons to be one of the most placid types.
All these moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.

Just about to suggest Orps pushrod! A lovely placid breed, and cochins! My youngsters love to jump up on my lap.
My OH had black rocks so asked him and he said wouldn't have them again. He would like some Barnevelders they are his favourite!
