Hugh F-W Urgent Money Request !!!
« on: June 09, 2008, 10:53 »
As most of you probably know, through the chicken out campaign, Hugh F-W has been presented with a bill by Tesco for sending out literature to their shareholders.

If you're not aware, it's all explained here LINK where you can make a donation.

He needs to raise £86,888 by Wednesday 11th. That's 2 days away !

Please support him if you feel you can. Thank you.

Nobody said this was going to be easy ... but some days are better than others!

Urgent money my eye.

Have a look at this .

If the money was really needed he could pay it easily but quite rightly, i think he's going to use the situation to turn the screw on Tesco.

I would argue that value of his business is not an indication of his cashflow situation. That's a hell of a slice of turnover to find quickly.

And, as you say, it does gain extra publicity for the anti-Tesco feeling, unless you happen to be a shareholder who doesn't support the chicken-out campaign.
Hopefully those who do, would forego a small percentage of their dividend to encourage the others to vote in favour.

Either way, I don't see why he should have to pay the lot when he's given a lot of his money (offset partially by publicity) and time (which IS money!) to the cause when it's a question of national ethics.

I'd like to think that it was a PR clanger by Tesco ... unfortunately I think they know their market VERY well indeed and are clear that their target customers put price/convenience/choice above ethics.   Witness their relatiely limited range of own brand organic products compared to eg Sainsburys, who have always been more 'middle class'...

Rob ?
The valuation of a business has no bearing on cash flow ? How do you work that out ?

exactly what i'd expect from tesco.. that's why i no longer spend my money with them.. i talked with my feet, and will talk with my debit card for this.

Sooner they realise they don't own the world the better.

Just because his turnover is high, and profits, presumably high, if his money is being reinvested in the business and on other projects, he can't just remove a lump sum like that from the equation without noticing.

Unless his personal fortune is huge, but I still don't see why he should stump up that sort of money for the benefit of our conscience.

The situation exists because we (I include ourselves, but not necessarily anyone else present) allowed it to. I feel that he has done a lot to bring it back to a more acceptable situation and I'd like to help the fella.
I don't begrudge him having a pot of money. He's obviously worked hard to get what he's got and this is a sideline which he feels we should all contribute to.

Am I starting to get preachy ?

Why should he find all the money himself? He's put up a large chunk so I don't think it unreasonable to ask for the public to donate the rest.

Unfortunately I agree that the majority of Tesco customers don't care where there food comes from, so long as it's cheap so I'm not suprised that Tesco are doing everything in their power to stop Hugh.

Rest assured that both partys concerned will end up making money out of the situation. Both are in a 'no lose' situation unles of course things  go to liigation and even then they are both well placed to stump up a bit of cash.

And hopefully the poultry industry will gain too, both finacially and in terms of welfare.

If the supers all raise the standard together, their market share is protected and farmers can, in theory, provide a better life for their livestock.

Agreed, but not everyone cares about chicken, or animals in general. Or other people for that matter.
Don't approve of their views but have to accept them I suppose.

Just hope all of those who do care and are able will give something to encourage Hugh to continue the campaign. If he gets struck by apathy, who else is there to step in ?

Hmm, this is a tricky one ....

£50 to HFW in the hope that he might or might not persuade Tesco to do the fair chicken thing or £50 to Tearfund for a water stand to stop Mwena walking 14 miles a day for dirty water.

Not sure

No don't shout at me!!!

A very good point Fifitrix.

And one which we all struggle with. It can only be your choice. But the point is to think it through and decide what you want. That way everyone wins.
There's a lot of fear about that someone might make a bit of money on the back of all this fundraising through extra publicity, etc. But no-one else seems to be offering an alternative. HFW has a vested interest but he's small-fry and will never reap the rewards that large scale farmers or the supermarkets will. He's given a lot of his own money to the cause which will probably take him a while to make back. So he's obviously not in it for the money.
But if nothing is done anywhere, nothing improves, and all we do is moan about the state of this and the price of that. At least by supporting a cause, we make a statement.

I hope the people who are putting Hugh down are giving their money, or at least their support, to some other cause, as you are doing.
