Until street lights came in Spaniards read the sky and pased down info as did ancient egyptians along the fertile nile and developed some basic practices that worked for them.- We use a comprehensive lunar calendar derived from and built on  Steiners bioagricultural research we gather. Biggest benifit we have seen is planting and harvesting of storing vegetables such as onions and squash on recommended three star fruit vegetable days.

I try and keep an open mind on this - my wife being an astrologer and all that, but I'm really not convinced that moon phases have any real effect unlike soil temperature, sun and water. If anyone knows of any scientific trials done (I mean properly) I'd love to see them.

The moons phases cant have any influence, its just the ammount of sunlight it reflects. The moons position in the sky could, but that doesnt follow the pattern of theseasons, which are influenced bu the sun and the earths tilt. What the ancients did in setting up celestial calenders was record the positions of the stars at point around the year, im sure your  missus john could tell us about the first point of aries. The four main points in the celestial calender are based on geo-solar (equinox's) or stellar (solstice) positions. Which stars were rising at sunset were the indicators of the points within the year, the constellations that these indicator stars, for example Aldeberan (taurus) were in became the signs of the zodiac, and all, along with the sun, follow the line of the ecliptic, which relates to the tilt of the earth.

I have never heard of any valid scientific experiments done on lunar calender planting, but, tomorrow i will log onto the online library at the OU and search the scientific literature databases for any papers on the subject.

Thanks Zak.
I wonder if the magical theories of growing set back the organic movement rather than helps it.

Too blooming cold to plant or sow anything today.
Never heard anything so barmy as moon planting.
Mind you I often wonder why some times things grow, sometimes they dont.  And I'm buggered if I can figure out what I did different. Still dont think it was the moon though.
One thing I do know is that only one thing comes from early planting and thats dissapointment. :(
As the great Percy Thrower used to say
" OI THINK THE ANSWER LIES IN THE SOIL"
