bird bath, good or bad idea?
« on: June 02, 2008, 00:11 »
I wish to get a bird bath for the birds on my allotment, being kind to nature. I'm just wondering if it's such a good idea? I know pigeons are naughty by eating brassicas, but birds are good right? I love watching them eating worms and grubs. They are such pretty, intelligent little things.

Do you think it's a good idea?

very very good.

pigeons will eat your brassicas with or without a drink.  :)

Encouraging the others might even scare off a few pigeons.

I have a pond and they come to that.  I have loads of birds on my plot and hopefully they will eat all the aphids and snails.  I have a sparrowhawk and that's helping with the pigeons but taking the blackbirds too unfortunately  :(

You'll find that bees will be at the birdbath as will butterflies, always good signs (unless they're cabbage butterflies   ). Put a large, flat rock in for them as they can't drink from high edges.

Beegly.

I think it's a good idea as well...but you have to remember..they will become used to drinking or bathing in it, so regular change of water and make sure you can provide unfrozen water in the winter.

In my pond at my last house, I used to put a little heater in a corner of the pond, to stop an area of about 6 inches freezing over. :)

wow, i never gave a thought to bees and butterflies being attracted by the water, i've been wondering how i could attract bees and butterflies etc. I'm very happy now. Thanks everyone. I bought the birdbath today from whelans, my local cement ornament centre. I'm going to paint it on the outside (so as not to contaminate the water in the bowl), any colours that birds or bees like? Any ideas?

Can't go wrong with white or pale yellow. But you may want a colour that blends better with the environment.

As long as it has clean water, I doubt they care much !  :)

I,ve seen on some gardening programmes where they cover the garden ornament in natural yoghurt so it will look aged, maybe worth a go.. :D
I used to work in a helium gas factory, but I walked out, no one talks to me like that.

Sparrows drink daily from a Celebrations tin in my garden, so I know they like red
A rock inside is also a good idea to guard against drowning, if bath is deep.

Beegly.

Bee's and butterfly's.

Don't quote me, but they are attracted by the colour blue....which in the insect world a white of yellow flower appears blue to them.
