Hubs just bought lots of apricots, cherries and nectarines. For a laugh I thought i'd try growing them from the stones. In the unlikely event that I am sucessful, how long are they likely to take to reach fruiting, and is that actually likely to happpen from greengrocer bought fruit ?

Doesn't always work, often they will grow, but maybe not fruit.  However I was given a peach tree once that an old neighbour grew from a peach stone and we did have peaches from it, but not loads.

Try it and see, you may get lucky!!!!!

Also, they can end up quite big, and take several years to come to fruit, if at all.

Be nice to see a few grown from stones and pips. Might do a couple myself. Can always Bonsai them !

I think a lot of fruit trees are grafted, so your tree will grow quite tall and I don't think it would produce edible fruit.

I think they can do. The grafting shoud only affect the size and shape of the tree surely ?

But I don't know enough about the germination to say what teh chances are. Aunt Sally might know.

And you also run the problem of whether or not the resulting tree/bush will grow well in your climate versus where it originally grew.

My dad used to plant peach, cherry and plum pits and he eventually got small trees - very small ones, that gave no fruit as they needed many more years to mature.
It's a whole lot faster and dependeable to simply buy small trees suited to your climate of varieties you particularly like.

Most stone fruit tree are the shortest to flower from seed - quite a few years still -, depends, you don't know what you get but it's an exiting experiment, most often useless waste of time  , sometimes a good gain.
