Plug Plants have arrived - What Now?
« on: May 30, 2008, 09:00 »
Hi Everyone :D
Just received plug plant collection from Suttons, instructions says they are ready to plant out however some plants, especially leeks and sweetcorn seem very small. :?
The collection consists of:-

Beetroot
Broccoli
Brussel Sprouts
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Perpetual Spinach
Leek
Sweetcorn

Would You plant all these now or grow them on in a nursery bed  :?:
Out of the south cometh the whirlwind....out of the north the cold!

Given that they are very small, I'd grow them on as you suggest.

It will be easier to protect this number of tender plants from slug invasion if they are in a smaller area.

The only thing is sweetcorn, it does not like root disturbance, maybe you could get these into larger pots, so the whole root ball could be knocked out when they are big enough, or even loo roll tubes.

Thinking on, maybe also the beetroot could go in now, as a larger plant would not transplant very well.

Certainly I'd grow on the leeks & brassicas as suggested.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thanks DD :D

The sweetcorn is about four inches high and a small plug of roots the leeks are about the same but only about half pencil width, all the plugs however are looking great and so far I have watered them in their bags.
