On way to work popped on da plot, me beans have keeled over and died, they were fine yesterday, no frosts here last night as we had a bit of rain through the night, will go back and have a look but all very strange, they were established and starting to shoot up but now all dry and dead.

Well, in some recent cold nights, the freaks of weather revealed themselves, beans dead in one spot, lovely 20 yards away.

I've had problems in the past with various bugs take a bite out of the stem at ground level.

I've even witnessed a woodlice doing this to my beans before. The plant then keels over and wilts exactly as you describe.

As Bear said it certainly sounds as if something has damaged the stem or roots.  Do let us know what you find Aidy  :!:

Well i will got to the foot of our stairs. I will give Bear and Aunty 8/10. In  all the years I have been growing beans I have never known or seen this before. Here is a picture, sorry its blurry but had to use littles one camera as mine is back in hospital having major surgery (again)...

Clearly seen is a maggot, where the stem is green is loads of them munching away. It appears there i such a thing as Bean Flys and these little (*****) are the bean stem maggot.

That's scary. As you are usually advised to grow indoors and plant out, if you have bean seed fly.

Are you going to put them somewhere else or what's the plan?

Aidy, my beans were wilting last week and came round agian.  I have had two theories to explain it, one was water the other wind.  I think I will go and see if your maggoty thing is on mine, as your ploot is not far from mine.

Eeeek.

(Did I tell you I hate maggots?)
I get my kicks on Plot 66!

Just read the link you put in.  I have done everything to *Encourage* the damn pests - I dug in spring; I put manure in just before.[/I] i planted out.

When qualifying is over I will go and look at my plants.

Thanks for posting this because now I know what to look for.
