Defra advise to discard top inch of shop bought carrot, so full of toxins.

 Because it gets peeled I don't wash, the dog gets the tops, he's nearly 10 now & runs about like he's 5, doesn't look 10 at all, maybe those toxins would be good for us ...........keeping looking younger

There you go , hyper activity disorder.

Anyone grown any of these with success and what did they taste like ??

I know they get a lot of pooing in the media about flavour,  I think it's undeserved, they taste like carrots and have good flavour, beaten by a lot, but they not bad at all. Got to grow a row of sacrificial favourite nearby to have any joy though, like Autumn king types or Kinby, they just love that one, very tasty kinbi is must say.

Carrots seem to be the most problematical veg to grow since their doesn't seem to be an easily available product available to counteract the dreaded Carrot Fly.(apart from putting physical barriers up and growing at 2 ft above the soil)

Surely the commercial growers must use something ?

Is it just that the Health and Safety Nannies don't trust us home gardeners with such a product ?

Is there anything out there that is available to us ?

 :D  :D  :D

some have been known to spray with TVO/parrafin.
If it wasn't for chemicals we'd be organic.

carrot fly can be controlled using pyrethrum 5ec applied once every two weeks, this is available from agropharm uk, and is now registered for organic use.

That's interesting information Pete,  how do you know about it ?

I've had a look on their web site and it's VERY expensive and only available to professional growers.

Does it infer that organic growers can use any other pyrethrum insecticide on crops, one that we could afford ?
