to those who DO plant things in loo rolls: do you put something at the bottom of the roll to stop the compost falling through?

I put the loo rolls into a tray and as the roots develop they bind the soil together. This year is the first I've tried growing this way & it's worked really well for things like sweet pea, broad beans, peas, mange-tout.

I can't grow anything in loo rolls as they are train funnels

Actually I had such mould the only time I tired it that I vowed never again

I have a good batch of bog rolls, no mould at all

They're Somerfield I think

The mould is harmless and it might be caused by over watering

Depends on what glue the manufactuers use in the loo rolls. Others have had problems when certain glues go moldy. Changing brands should sort the problem if you want to save the rolls. And don't crowd the rolls too close together, another mold inducing factor. Same with watering too much.

I've been saving up me bog rolls for the sweetcorn sowing session at the end of the month. I stand mine up in those blue plastic mushroom boxes as they're quite deep. Those clear plum containers from the supermarket are ok too

I firm the compost in the bottom end to stop it all falling out. Bit of a faff but I get there in the end

Apologies if you all do this already!
I cut off the bottom of a Sainsburys washing liquid bottle in the shape of a curve to make a scoop.
If you unscrew the cap you can also use it as a funnel to fill loo rolls.
Having said that I have found Richy's pots much easier to manage!
