what soil to put in a bath?

I'm hoping to get an old bath to grow some carrots in....

What is the best soil to use? Should I just dig some soil from the plot (I have quite wet clay soil) or should I get some bags of compost?

I have a bath with carrots in and I have used general purpose compost with a mix of sharp sand (approx 4:1) and they are growing - can't yet say how well as they are only a couple of centimetres high. I am planting a few and every couple of weeks to spread them over the season and making sure I don't overload the bath and give the carrots space. I will let you  know how mine turn out - please let me know how yours get on

If you check the Medwyn Williams articles on this site, he uses a mix that leans towards the sandier side. Easier for carrot roots to go straight down and not get hairy from too much manure, etc. Only catch is that the soil mix in tubs, etc need to be replaced yearly.

I'm having a new bathroom fitted in the next couple of weeks so will have an old bath to recycle up at the plot to plant some carrots.

Will I be too late to sow them if the bath isn't available until week beginning 6th of May :?:  I have some seeds for Flyaway (at least I think that's what they're called).

Not too late at all. Couple of years ago I sowed some Autumn King in June & had a good crop.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Snapdragon,

Look in yellow pages for a local independent plumber.

I got mine from one and he was happy to let me have a bath he'd taken out of a house because he said he'd have to pay to get rid of it.

The same thing applies if you want old tyres - my local independent tyre repair place let me have some as they have to pay to get them taken away.

Our best carrots come from July seedings. It's warm enough for them to germinate quickly, and the cooler fall chills the roots so the sweetness comes through. Those chilled ones keep the best.
