Carrots

I am going to sow my carrots in very large tubs which i have prepared by riddling the soil and mixing it with sand to get a really fine tilth. I have been told by fellow allotmenteers that i should use an iron bar to make smaller holes and then put some finer stuff in and sow the carrot this way.
My question is, can't i just sprinkle the seed over the surface so i can get more carrots to the container and thin them out later?

Of course - I scatter sow my carrots and thin them out by eating the little ones.

Sow them mixed with fine sand in circles, don't bother with the holes like gobs said they must be growing for show or getting mixed up with parsnips which grow well in those conditions.

When you say mix the seed with sand, do you mean play sand the one the children use or building sand?
