My chicken just doesn't want to pop one out!
« on: April 23, 2008, 16:35 »
Hi all, am a newbie to this, have been looking for a good forum like this for ages now so WAHOO!
I have 3 Rhode Island hens, round about 30+ weeks old now, 2 of them are fine and daily layers but the one that seems to be the least dominant hasn't started laying anything at all yet, any ideas on how I can help give it a nudge at all? (apart from waving a hot frying pan in front of it)

Just so you know - they have laying boxes they can go in to at any time, there free to roam as much as they want in our fairly good sized garden and there is no sign of illness or getting bullied by the other hens.

Fraid I can't help DJ!  Of our 12 laying hybrids, which are nearly 1 year old now, one had only laid 2 eggs since we got them last August, but now she has laid 2 in the past month!  so that 's a total of 4 eggs!

Some birds take longer than others to start laying. Nothing you can do to hurry things along except of course, feeding well and general wellbeing stuff. It would be a boring world if we were all the same, spose that goes for chooks as well  :D
If you do things well, do them better. Be daring, be first, be different, be just.

No am pretty sure she's not hiding them, I've checked everywhere.
Think I'm just going to have to be patient on this one

Hi and welcome  :D
I'd suggest feeding them only on layers either pellets or mash and just handful of mixed grain between them last thing before they roost, plenty off fresh water. No treats whatsoever for 3 weeks or so and see if that helps.
On the other hand you could be feeding them like this already   But I've read that a strict diet can induce a reluctant layer to start laying.
He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.
