Has anybody out there tried fibre pots?  Are they any good?
Can these be planted in the ground with seedling? would they just rot away?

I hate them  :!:

In my opinion they prevent the roots from getting out into the soil it the are not absolutly ringing wet when planted in the ground.  They rot down very slowly especially in dryish conditions, and once dry again they are very difficult to re-wet.  :(

I'm using Richy's paper tubes this year  :D

I use them a lot but they do have to be kept wet! I've done beans, chilli's, courgettes, herbs in them in the past. Chillis I take out of the pots and throw the pots on my composter, beans and courgettes I've planted in the ground and they've rotted down. Roots were growing out of the bottoms and sides of the pots before the plants went in the ground so I knew they'd be ok!

Think you need to try different things and decide if you get on with then yourself, if not try something else!

I think the bigger ones 3"+ may be Ok if you keep them well-watered. the small ones seem to suck the moisture away from the seedling.
Self-sufficient in rasberries and bindweed. Slug pellets can be handy.

All my seeds are germinating in cardboard egg boxes, so far so good, I'm relieved to say. When I plant outdoors I'll just carefully tear holes in the bottom of each as I've 1 seed per cell, so to speak. I think/hope it'll work ok  :)

I have tried them with success, though this year i am also using toilet rolls tubes as they are open ended.Once the seedlings gets established the roots holds the compost together within the roll, :D

I hate fibre pots as well. They're slow to moisten, suck moisture from the contents if they dry out, and will wick out ground moisture if the tops aren't burned in the garden soil. Overall pain for great expense. Give me good plastic cell trays anytime or loo rolls.

I only use them 'cos I bought a bulk of them last year at a really cheap price, and they're best used whilst in a propagator to stop them drying out as quickly.
I wonder if mine worked ok because they were so thin (hence the cheapness??!!)
Buying plastic pots now though

And in no way was I trying to insult Aunty's opinions!!

Thanks for all your comments, I have got fibre pots and plastic pots as a  back up, so hopefully all will not be lost.  Nice to know I can plant them in the ground though.  I have noticed that the fibre pots dry out alot quicker than the plastic ones so I water them daily.
I have window cills overflowing with seedlings and I want to get these out into my plastic (greenhouse) tent, but we are still getting bad frosts at night, should I wait till it warms up more  :? after all they are used to central heating.
