Flock dynamics
« on: March 09, 2008, 20:10 »
Hi
I'm a bit embarrassed to ask about flock dynamics when I only have 3 hens!
My situation is I have owned 3 hens since september a mum and 2 chicks (light sussex bantams) and I'm planning for various reasons (size of run, bullying, husband etc) to only keep two hens (which was the number I was originally going to have). My question is who to get rid of (in the nice rehoming sort if way).
Mother Hen is top hen and bullies both other hens but especially Chuckles (this worries me as they are going to spend more time in their run in the summer).  My first thought was to rehome Chuckles to my sister (whos also starting chicken keeping).  But Chuckles is also the friendliest (which is important to me as I have kids).
So I could rehome Mother Hen (although my sister is not prepared to take her!) as she causes problems with her bullying.  But if I rehome her will the next in-line (Princess Snow White) take on Mother Hens evil role?
When Mother Hen is off laying an egg the two daughters just seem to get on so well with no bullying.
Any advice gratefully received

Why can't you keep the 3?  if you only have 2 hens and one dies, the other one will be very lonely until you replace it, but if you have to, I'd get rid of the bully!

On second thoughts oh has to stay as he's not getting off that lightly.
I am reducing the number to two as that is the number I promised my oh we would keep (when he reluctantly agreed to have chickens), mother hen and her girls came as a job lot (I was only meant to have 1 chick from the brood) and I thought he'd weaken but he is very stubborn
Plus if I have only two I think they are more likely to be able to free range in summer, with a third less poo being produced.
Luckily I know enough people with chooks if one did die (hopefully not) I would be able to get a friend very quickly.
Personally I'd prefer to keep 3 but I think the 2 daughters would have a better existance without bully Mother Hen.
Would anyone like a moody but very beautiful Light Sussex Bantam?  :D
Cheers
Ness
