Increase in allotment rent
« on: March 03, 2008, 19:22 »
just got home from work and the council have sent me a letter saying they are increasing the rent on the allotment from april this year. The charge will be 16p per sq yd. not sure how to work out what my rent will come to but i think the word increase might just give me a clue as to the outcome of this, currently paying £36.25. Anyone else had anything similar?

£48.00 would be a guestimate
average plot is 300 Sq yds  300 x 16p = £ 48.00

Mine went up by £2 a plot to £18 a year

they have us all by the 'curly kales' where rent is concerned, they know it would take a lot for most of us to give up the plot!
if it grows, it grows! if it doesnt ,, ah well .. there's always next year. :-)

ageed, but it is still very good value with what we take home in produce, then the exercise and social side of it.

Around £50 would still be less than £1 a week so you are all right when you say its worth it and i do love it, so i will just have to pay up.

ours has gone up to about £4 this year. But ours is a association which let's the ground of the council. But if the gardens are all full ( Which they are) and are well looked after ( which they are) the council rebates the rent but these are never filtered down to the garden holder      it just goes in the bank that the other 13,000 quid is that is never used last year there was only 58 quid actually paid out of the rents every thing else was rebated.

We must be very lucky in Ashington, Northumberland as we pay £10 per year for our plot on an association. It is not run by the Council, however, they are seeking to do a survey of our views about the allotments.  My feeling is that they want to become involved and that would mean un-necessary requlation and price increases yearly as allotments are becoming more popular.

My plot is 330+ feet long and 33 feet wide - a quarter of an acre.  The rent went up from £8 - to £10 - and we pay in arrears!

I don't know about all allotments, but I think that they have to give one years notice of any change in rents... I know that I've just handed out letters giving a years notice - I think it's in the allotment act or something.

We have loads of problems with people taking on plots and doing the bare minimum - This is a great idea that I think I'll be putting forward at the next comittee meeting!
