Worst weeds
« on: June 04, 2024, 17:37 »
What are the worst offenders on your plot/garden?

Today I’ve been tackling a profusion of speedwell in the asparagus bed. Very annoying as their thin but matted roots take a solid hold of the soil so are not easy to pull out entirely.
Elsewhere on the plot, bindweed is on a bid for total plot domination.
It’s been the worst year I’ve ever known for it.
Oh, and raspberry suckers!
Not theoretically a weed but… I’m digging the lot out

Bind weed in the polytunnel I dug out a large bucket full one roots  having already filled one the day before and I bet there will be another one next weekend
I just keep digging it up and removing as much of the roots as I can

Couch grass and sticky willy, which gets worst offender status because it brings me out in a rash.

Bind weed.

When I got my plot 5 years ago there was a small patch in one corner. I had no idea what it was and it had quite a nice flower so I left it alone.

What a poor, ill-educated, naïve muppet I was back then.

We all have our nemesis don’t we!
My plot was practically all couch grass when I first got it.
9 years later and the odd bit still pops up.
Bind weed is awful this year. But I do find it very satisfying to follow along the root and dig it up, they are so chunky this year. Another (compost)  bag full today.
I hate creeping anything. Buttercup was really bad last year. This year we seem to have creeping cinque foil I think it’s called  >:(

Explosion of Mairs tail, think it may be due to the wet weather as last year it wasn't too bad but completely taken over a couple of beds. Had managed to control buttercup, bindweed and couch grass after 3 years on this plot but Willowherb is bad too and the plot next door is now vacant and completely overgrown so think it will be an ongoing battle  :(

Horsetail is having a major year on my plot, I think because it has been so wet.  It is just everywhere this year.
Equally annoying on our plot are bindweed and couch grass.
The couch grass is attracted to anything with shallow roots making weeding difficult, notably raspberries, gooseberries and asparagus.

My top 3 are (in descending order of most hated):

Couch grass:Very vigorous and sends roots into everything. Grows like stink too...
Cinquefoil: Creeping habit and a taproot - utter barsteward. Also very vigorous.
Bindweed: Not so vigorous but very persistent and difficult to dig out as the roots snap so easily...

Speedwell, ground ivy, some bindweed and mare's tail.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
