Too early for Toms?
« on: March 04, 2023, 16:49 »
I have been allocated a slot in our allotment poly tunnel. I have planted some seeds in large pots but wondering if it's too early. Any views? thanks.

I wonder if it’s a bit early as the forecast is for colder weather.
Today’s paper advises sowing tomatoes but that is in heat and for greenhouse growing.
Perhaps ask others how warm the poly tunnel is at this time of year??
Keep digging

It's a bit early for sowing toms out in a polytunnel or cold GH really, but worth just a few seeds because even if they don't thrive, you can always sow well up to mid/end of March if it looks a bit dodgy with the weather! You never know, the seeds you've popped in might take a day or two longer to germinate, and when they get going, we might have got over the cold spell, and you'll be away!

Why not keep a few seeds back for a later sowing, just in case - that's assuming you are allowed to keep your slot open!

why not start in warmth at home then move to poly tunnel night time temps are still too cold in poly or cold greenhouse [you could start other hardier peas beetroot etc in poly] good luck.

Great idea! I'll try that. I have sprinkled some radish and salad seeds there as well.

If you do decide to sow less hardy things like toms and keep them indoors, put them on a windowsill that has the best light then place a piece of cardboard covered in tinfoil behind them so as to reflect the light and to stop them getting leggy.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.
