Sowing carrot seeds mixed with sharp sand is a well known technique but what ratio of sand to seed is required to ensure a reasonably thin sowing?

I can't answer your question, but have you considered using one of the seed sowing devices such as this one by Gardman? I'm pretty sure mine was much cheaper than this, mind; from one of the cheap high street stores, like Wilko. They're easy to use and adjust and have various apertures to suit different sizes of seed. I've used it to sow carrot seed with quite reasonable success.

A calloused palm and dirty fingernails precede a Green Thumb.

I've never tried that method, but this video seems clear enough...

I only use pelleted seed for carrots. It's much easier to handle and you can sow it thinly enough to avoid issues with carrot fly

I've always just put a small amount of seed in the centre of a saucer and carefully drag individual seeds with my finger around the upper edge, then just rotate the saucer and flick them from there.
Works very accurately.

Saves, especially with the baby carrot types that I tend to grow having to thin them out wastefully later in the pots I grow them in.
Do the same with other small seed too.
