Sowing more carrots!
« on: July 02, 2015, 11:17 »
Do you think it is worth trying to sow more carrots or is it too late?
I actually use early carrot seeds as these come up quicker.

Beat me to it, i will be putting more autumn king in up to the end of july as indicated on the seed packet.

These should be good for harvest from Nov-Dec I hope, although I am not sure how they fare if we start getting frosts during the back end.

I'll treat it as a 'trial'.  ;)

I've just sown some Paris Market (little round ones) in a spare bit of raised bed.  Like the others have said, many carrots can be sown up until the end of July, hope you gets loads!

I also sow Autumn King at the end of July and have found they overwinter in the ground perfectly well, unless of course the ground freezes solid. Commercial growers cover the rows with a thick layer of straw, which makes harvesting easier in snowy/icy conditions, which is worth a thought

Berlikumer carrot from Lidl did very well for me last year. Planted again this year. Good variety

Bought Autumn king yesterday and they will be going in this weekend. Had good success last year with a mid July sowing.

Ive sown AK2 Carrots as late as mid June and they overwintered great.I was still lifting them in Feb / March.
Make sure you keep them moist until they are well germinated and the 2nd leaves are showing.
99% Organic and 1% Slug Pellets.

Allotment holder since 27th May 2007.

Because it is so dry it might be best to sow in drills rather than broadcast. Draw out a shallow furrow, pour water along it, sow the seeds, tamp them into the surface with fingers, draw over a little soil, tamp down the row with the back of a rake. That is what I do.

Remember that carrot fly can be active right into September so cover with mesh.

This is what I do as well, with the only difference being when I have tamped down and recovered with soil I give them another good drink. Followed by a drink a day (if dry ) until the seeds are u and running.

The only time I didn't follow my regime above I got almost zero gemination , it was hot and a watered once and let them be and the result was no Carrots for tea!!
