most hens do stop laying through the winter months, as they moult and all their energy is going into growing new feathers.

i agree with a previous post, tell the fellas you're after some of your own chickens and ask their advice. i'd be very surprised if they tell you they dont feed them.

and if they are old girls, they are allowed to look a bit tatty.
